The JMU Journalism website is back in full swing again with the announcement of its new editorial team for the academic year 2010/11.
Liverpool Life website roles were allocated to the 33-strong team after a two-day interview process earlier this week. The interviews, conducted by Journalism lecturers John Mathews and Kate Heathman, were used as an opportunity for students to put themselves forward for a number of jobs, as well as gaining vital world of work experience. Vacancies still exist for volunteers from levels two and three.
The site is being used to encourage the students of Liverpool Screen
School to converge their newsgathering talents and this year's team
will be hoping to build upon what was a groundbreaking effort by
the department's recent graduates.
Callum Reece, who now shares the music editor role with Scott
Partridge, said: “It's a great opportunity for us to get some real
experience in the world of work so I'm really pleased to be a part of it.”
Adam Hicks, who is specialising in radio for his final year on the
Journalism course, is the site's new radio content editor, alongside
Jill Foster. He said: “It feels great to have got the job. It was the one that I applied for so now I'm just really excited and looking forward to getting stuck in. I don't plan on being restricted to my role, so I know that it's going to be a lot of hard work.”
Claire Bennett, who will work with Andrew Hill in the chief sub-editor position, sees the benefits of volunteering for a job on JMU Journalism. She said: “I think working for the site is a good thing to put on the CV and should be an advantage for when I'm trying to get a job in the future.”
The announcement of the roles was followed by a number of news conferences. The new group got straight into preparing for stories in the coming weeks, such as coverage of the John Lennon 70th birthday memorial celebrations, as well as getting to know each other a little better.
