Lucy Mills graduated from John Moores in 2007 after studying International Journalism.
She decided not to go into journalism afterwards but still felt that the skills she learnt from the course have helped her in her new job in developing the business of Wates, a large construction company:
"I learnt a variety of skills from the journalism course. The writing skills have been very beneficial and always will be. Also, I learnt excellent presentation skills as I specialised in TV journalism, and this has definitely helped in interviews and presentations I have done since graduating.
"I completed various work placements at Sky Sports, Granada, FIFA, BBC and all of these gave me an excellent insight into the working world and how you really have to push hard to open the doors. Doing that work experience shows prospective employers that you have a bit of 'get up and go' in you, regardless of the industry.
"I'd say all the skills I learnt whilst at University have helped me get my present job.
"I had to pester slightly to open the door for this job and that was something I learnt the art of whilst at University. I'd mention Hazel Barratt here as she really showed us the right way to influence people.
This is also a beneficial skill in my current role in trying to win business for the company.
"Hazel was an excellent teacher. She really pushes you, gives excellent constructive criticism and you wanted to work hard for her. She always praised your work and was always willing to help.
"I am currently working in a Business Development role for Wates Construction. The job encompasses various different duties and I am really enjoying it. I assist with tender submissions, represent the
company at events, make sure I know what is going on in the market place, build relationships and assist with the marketing materials. I definitely make use of my journalism skills.
"I got a rounded education at John Moores, made some excellent friends, and had great tuition.
Lucy is currently back working with the university on the WoW factor initiative, she is establishing a link between Wates and John Moores to harness the best talent from the university.
