Ok, it wasn’t quite as glitzy as the Oscars but the 2009 LJMU graduation ball did exactly what it said on the tin.
The glamed up girls and boys were transported to Anfield in style on 1970’s double Decker buses, where they were met with a bucks fizz reception.
Anfield’s Champion suite played host to several hundred members of the class of 2009 and we were treated to a melon starter, a chicken main and a cheese cake desert.
It wasn’t long before we were being ushered back on our peasant wagons, full length prom dresses and tuxedos looking somewhat out of place on the top deck with its graffiti covered walls and cigarette burned seats.
Back at the student union there was even more on offer to justify our £55 a head ticket, including: an ice sculptor, a red carpet, a fake roulette table (fake because you couldn’t place bets – dam licensing laws, I blame the MPs and their expenses or is it the bankers) and stilt walkers.
The music was a good mix of some chessey classics (who doesn’t love Phil Collins and Neil Diamond I ask) and dance.
There was special drinks laid on for the event including a graduation cocktail and champagne, but unfortunately the event was cut short when the fire alarm went off and the building had to be evacuated, although nobody quite knew what to do as the bars shut and people were told to leave but the DJ kept playing and told us to ignore it.
Although for all its faults and lack of glamour it was a great night, the students had pulled together some fine examples of glamour on a budget, everyone was in good spirits having just finished uni forever and with their future ahead of them.
The fire alarm and the un-classy buses are all part of the charm that makes John Moores the fantastic place it is to study and the graduation ball was a fond farewell and good luck from the university that has nurtured us all for the past three years.
