Perry's 'candy land' impressed the Echo Arena crowd; YouTube: One of her recent hits, 'Firework'
Pop princess Katy Perry put on a show that was good enough to eat as her California Dreams tour came to the Echo Arena.
The 26-year-old invited us to her Californian candy land, complete with candy floss clouds, cupcakes and a lollipop staircase. Like many artists who have chosen a theme or story for their show, Perry certainly followed suit. She was on a quest to find the Baker Boy and discover the secret of a delicious cupcake.
Along the way, she loses her cat, Kitty Purry, who she sets out to be reunited with and after a long journey of twists and turns, there is a happy ending. However, the underlying lightheartedness of it all did not detract from the real message, Perry’s own journey and her rise to superstardom.
Despite recent illness, Perry really got the crowd into the
party spirit by treating them to hits such as ‘Teenage
Dream’, ‘Firework’, ‘E.T’, ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and the summer
smash ‘California Gurls’.
Perry took to her Twitter account as the tour was being
developed to say that she hoped it would ‘engage’ all of
the senses: ‘sight, sound, smell, taste, touch’. As well as
the delicious looking set, she treated her audience to 17
costume changes.
Throughout the performance, there were glitter explosions,
bubbles, a mini firework display and even a whiff of candy
floss in the air. She really did pull out all the stops in making
the show one of quirkiness, excitement and fun: the essence
of Katy Perry herself.
Her vocal was not something to be overlooked either, with the strength and range of her voice coming through when she sang. Perry showed this especially when she performed an acoustic set of covers which featured Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl (In the World)’ and Lady GaGa’s ‘Born This Way’.
One of the best things about Perry was to see the effort she put into interacting with the crowd. She not only got them on stage but took the time to confess her love for roast dinners and popular reality TV shows ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘My Big Fat Gyspy Weddings’.
This was a really fun and enjoyable concert: Perry is definitely the ultimate ‘California Gurl’ and we love her for it.
