Liverpool’s Lewis Roman had his moment to shine on the second episode of The BBC’s Young Apprentice this week, as he and fellow Scouser Lizzie Magee compete for Lord Sugar's favour.
The 16-year-old from Merseyside bravely put himself forward for the project manager role even though it was only the second week in. The task involved coming up with a new, innovative product aimed at the mother and baby market, which proved a difficult task for a group of teens.
The boys group, led by Lewis, came up with the idea for a hippo-shaped flask which holds and insulates a feeding bottle, whilst keeping the tot entertained. The team split into two and tensions grew amongst the camp, as they not only had to design the product they also had to cast models for the advertising campaign.
With their product, 'Harris the Hippo', the boys’ team had to then visit and pitch their idea to three mainstream retailers. Although their flask did attract attention, and gained over 5,000 orders, the pitch let them down on the day. It was unfortunately the flustered and nervous Liverpudlian who gave the shaky delivery, and conclusively ended up in the boardroom with his team.
The girls' team, which was victorious with over 7,000 orders, included another contestant from Liverpool, 16-year-old, Lizzie. The guitar strap designer creatively came up with the group’s winning idea of a portable cushion which aids whoever is holding a small baby, by adding support for its head.
Throughout the task, Lewis stood out to be very confident and witty with his comments.
Giving the boys a last chance to impress, Lord Sugar asked why each of them shouldn’t be fired, to which Lewis desperately responded: “I’ve got the experience in how businesses work, and I think that throughout this whole process, I could really blossom.”
Luckily dodging the firing line and was saved for another week, and as Lord Alan's famous line: "You're fired" was delivered to Ben Fowler from Birmingham.
