Best Dressed Award winner
Grand National 2010
I don’t think it has hit me yet that I have just won the most exciting
competition I will ever win in my life.
I love fashion and to win something which was judged on how well
you have put together an outfit is amazing and ultimately flattering.
The competition was judged by people such as Justine Mills (owner
of Liverpool boutique Cricket) and stylist Lorraine Mc Cullouch, who
clearly know exactly what is in fashion at the moment and what stands
out in the crowd.
I was picked from 1,900 entrants in the Aintree Style Competition
ahead of last weekend's Grand National. The finalists were whittled
down to 17, then five and then, obviously one.
When I decided to enter the competition I can honestly say I did not think I was going to win. I entered with two other friends as we all love fashion, and thought if we have made a big effort for the day we may as well see what the judges think.
When I first went on stage and attempted to ‘strut my stuff’ for the judges, I was handed a ‘hot favourite’ tag and was told to make sure I watched my phone at 4pm, when the 17 finalists would be announced. I laughed it off, and presumed a lot of girls were also given the same compliment. At 4pm we wandered back to the style tent, when we got there I was told I was meant to be on stage.
The final 17 then turned into the final five and I was (to my complete shock) one of them.
I think it’s safe to say I didn’t sleep a wink on the Friday night, preparing to come back for the final judging on Grand National day. I don’t think I have ever been so nervous in my life. I’m not sure why I was so anxious, but when you start thinking that all of these amazing prizes could be yours, it’s hard to pretend the final five would be good enough.
I took my mum along with me on Saturday and we sat with the other finalists for two of the longest hours in my life waiting to be taken over to the Winners' Enclosure to find out who had won. When my name was announced, all I wanted to do was cry. I looked down to my mum and she was in hysterics which definitely made me worse!
The opportunities I have received after winning this competition have been incredible, especially as I want to become a broadcast journalist. I have been lucky enough to be interviewed on Juice FM, Radio Merseyside and various local and national newspapers. I have also be asked to do a fashion shoot with the Liverpool Echo, giving them a peek into my (fit to burst) wardrobe, which is an added bonus.
The prizes that I won after becoming the winner are mind-blowing. I cannot wait to have a relaxing holiday with my boyfriend in Barbados, and then go to London for my own photo shoot styled by Jeff Banks; as well as drive my brand new car!
I don’t think Ladies' Day at the races will ever be the same again. I will always look back on 2010’s as one of the best days of my life.
