A ground-breaking scheme has been revealed in which students and local residents will work together to create a better Liverpool.

The ‘Give Liverpool Some Love’ scheme is being used to raise awareness and initiate action on issues such as recycling, antisocial behaviour and home security. The campaign was launched by the Liverpool Students Union and includes volunteers from the University of Liverpool and LJMU.

Chris Redmond, of the LSU, said: “There will be student representatives going round communities such as Kensington, Aigburth and Smithdown. We really want to help with community-based issues.”

Despite being only in its very early stages, the scheme has already drawn praise from the police, the city council and various residents’ associations. Central Liverpool Labour Councillor Nick Small said: “I’m really pleased. This scheme will allow communities to maximise these opportunities and should benefit everyone.”

Kensington resident Julie Woolacott said: “I think that the students feel really welcomed by Scousers, it’s great. It helps that both of the city’s universities are mainly based in the city centre and not out in the suburbs.”

For information about the scheme, or if you have any issues that you would like to raise, go to the ‘Give Liverpool Some Love’ Facebook page, or call 0151 231 4923.
