Flash mob entertains Liverpool shoppers

Shoppers were treated to a surprise on a rainy Saturday afternoon as hundreds of dancers took over Liverpool One for a carefully-choreographed treat.

Around 200 performers from dance schools and academies across the region took part in a flash mob, which attracted a large audience of shoppers in the area.

Crowds began to gather as people wondered what was going on as dancers took their places outside shops on the group floor of Liverpool One. The flash mob was kept a secret and was not advertised to the public in advance.

Helen McGuire, 25, from the dance group ‘Live Wire’, said:
“It’s all been arranged by Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI).
They hold classes all over and this year it’s the 18th
birthday of MDI and so there’s all sorts of events going on
and this is just one of them.”

A variety of dance routines were showcased, including
contemporary, ballroom and hip-hop. Dancers performed
to songs including, Michael Bublé’s 'Moondance' and The
Arctic Monkeys’ 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance
Floor'.

Lauren Nicholson, 14, from the Wirral dance group,
‘Complete Works’ commented: “We’ve been rehearsing
since last Sunday, but it’s been worth it. I think there were
about 20 dance groups taking part.”

A famous flash mob occurred in 2009 at Liverpool Street
Station in London, where over 400 'strangers' broke into a
synchronised dance routine as part of an advert for T-Mobile.
