Hope Street Hotel expansion is estimated to cost around £4.5 million; VIP guest Condoleezza Rice

A string of high-profile guests, including Hollywood celebrities and top politicians, has proved that the £4.5million expansion of the Hope Street Hotel was money well spent.

Many well-known names have set foot through the doors of the hotel situated on the internationally acclaimed Hope Street since it opened for business in 2004.

Some of the celebrities reported to have chosen the hotel for their visit to Liverpool since it's expansion include movie director Quentin Tarantino, Liverpool-born Sex and the City star, Kim Cattrall and the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.

Mary Colston, Creative Director at Hope Street Hotel said: “Some guests are more high maintenance than others but not due to their celebrity status. We’re very discreet.

“Condoleezza Rice was absolutely charming, whatever you think of her political stance. It was the best of times for us; it was amazing to deal with the State Department of the United States and the Foreign Office. They were so impressed with Liverpool.

“It’s amazing who comes to Liverpool to visit. We get some well known people who come to this tiny city so it does amuse us when we have a Nobel Prize winner in physics to stay, an author or a film star. In another hotel they’ve probably got a well-known personality, so it’s due to the pulling power of Liverpool.”

Liverpool has welcomed the opening of the many new business rivals for Hope Street, such as Hilton Hotel Liverpool and Novotel, since the redevelopment scheme in the city took effect. However, Hope Street claim to be unscathed by this.

Mary Colston said: “We cater for a niche market; we’re not only physically away from the other hotels but we’re not competing for the people attending the Echo Arena and the BT Conference Centre and a lot of people are constantly coming to Liverpool.”

Since the expansion that saw the takeover of an adjoining 1970s police station, the hotel has almost doubled in size. Boasting 89 guest rooms, particular attention has been paid to the decor. Management have been directly involved in the design and the selection of the furniture which has a warm and simple wooden theme that has been carried throughout the premises.

The hotel's Creative Director added: “We’re not [trying to be] luxurious, we’re not trendy, but if you’re somebody that likes solid wood with a good finish then you’ll like us.”
