The whole country is getting set for royal wedding fever, with street party invitations being sent out and tea towels gracing our kitchens in order to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton on 29th April.
Or so the newspapers would have us believe. In reality, is Liverpool excited by the thought of a wedding between two people we don't even know, or is the prospect of an extra bank holiday the real reason so much fuss is being made about the happy couple? JMU Journalism has been finding out by asking the Liverpool public what it all means to them.
The wedding, which is to take place at Westminster Abbey, is being billed as a 21st Century version of the famous ceremony involving William’s parents, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, who married on 29th July, 1981.
With 600,000 people lining the streets of London in celebration and a global TV audience of 750 million, Charles and Diana’s nuptials are recognised as one of the country’s most iconic historical events of the 20th Century, and it is widely expected that the 29th April will be equally as memorable.
However, Lorraine Smith, 35, from Crosby believes there are more important issues on the public's agenda than the wedding, due to the current financial instability facing the country. She said: "Personally, it is the furthest thing from my mind at the moment due to cuts in my workplace, hence worrying about my job. It is a lovely idea but I can’t say that I am fully interested at this moment in time.”
Sophie McLaughlin, 19, from Kensington feels that the city should embrace the celebrations. She said: "I think it's nice. A royal wedding doesn't come around very often and we should enjoy it."
Michael Woodcock, 20, from Netherton echoed the sentiments of many when he said: “I couldn’t care less as long as I get a day off work.”

“The royal family can forget it if they think I’m going to care. I can’t stand people who love the royals; they don’t do a thing for Liverpool or the north in general.”
“I have the feeling it should mean something to me but it doesn’t. I remember the previous royal weddings and the big impacts they had. I’m not anti-monarchy but I’m just not interested at all in William and Kate.”
"Personally, it is the furthest thing from my mind at the moment due to cuts in my workplace, hence worrying about my job. It is a lovely idea but I can’t say that I am fully interested at this moment in time.”
“I couldn’t care less as long as I get a day off work.”
“It’s just another wedding and nothing special at all. Millions of people get married every year so why celebrate theirs? It’s a big fuss about nothing.”
“I’m glad I don’t live here anymore as I won’t have to put up with all this nonsense. Why should it mean anything to normal working class people when they’re getting nothing but spending cuts and job losses? If you ask me the whole thing is a PR stunt and a waste of taxpayers’ money and time.”
“I think it’s a good thing. After all we need something to cheer this country up so why not a royal wedding? Charles and Diana was a wonderful occasion and I feel the same can be said of William and Kate. I shall be watching and will say a prayer for them both.”
"It’s just another wedding isn’t it? I don’t think about it to be honest! Why should that be more special than any other wedding?”
“The only good thing about the royal wedding is that we get an extended bank holiday. Why should a couple of rich kids getting married matter to us?”
"It doesn’t mean a thing to me as I will be in Germany that weekend on a stag party. If I was here it would just be a day off college for me and an excuse to go to the pub and ‘celebrate’ the wedding.”
"It is stupid, pointless and a ploy to make us believe we're happy."
"It is great, Britain needs some cheerful news rather than all the depressing headlines and scandals that dominate the papers these days. Also it's an extra day off work so I can't really complain."
"I think Will and Kate are genuine nice people and I am quite excited for the wedding. And the day off work is a bonus too."
"I think it is nice that he is marrying quite a genuine common person however, I think that the wedding will get too much publicity."
"The hype over it all is pathetic. I heard there's going to be a film made about it as well and that's just stupid and a complete waste of money."
"I disagree with the Royal Family altogether. The idea of being born into royalty and not having to work for it frustrates me so the wedding means nothing to me."
“I'm not too fussed about it really. It doesn’t really have any relevance to me or my life at all. I don’t care about the Royals to be honest.”
“I feel good about it. I think it would be nice if everybody did get the day off. But about taxes, I’m beyond that situation, but I think It’s a good idea that the workers get a day off. They’re a proper nice couple as well.”
"I hope they’re going to be very happy. It’s part of England’s heritage and all that, so you know, I get a day’s holiday and I hope that they don’t go the same way as his mother and father.”
“I think it’s lovely, I like it yes, I am looking forward to it.”
“I don’t know if it has any relevance to be honest. I’m actually quite glad because of the possibility of a new monarchy. Look at the Queen now, I feel extremely sorry for her with what she’s had to cope with, with the generation below her, they made a laughing stock of the monarchy and this is fresh hope I think. William is a sensible guy, she looks like a nice girl, and I think the whole country is looking to it to say 'come on let's gets unity back'.”
“It means a day off work and that’s about it.”
“To be honest I’m not really a big fan of the Royals. I mean, I’m glad that I’m getting a day off. I think it’s kind of an important event because she’s going to be the next Queen.”
“I’m not really that bothered about it, but good luck to them. I hope they do well, I’m not really into the Royal family, it’s two different worlds.”
"Big waste of money that we aren’t even allowed to go to. If I’m going to spend money on a wedding I expect to be invited."
"I'm not really bothered, I’m glad we have a day off."
"I’m not really fussed, it’s a waste of money. I’ll probably have to work the bank holiday anyway."
"It’s alright I suppose, I’m not really a Royal person. It will be nice to see the dress and it's nice for Will with what he’s been through with his mum, and Kate’s a nice girl."
"Nothing. I’m working class so I just think it’s more money wasted."
"I think it’s a good thing, doesn’t really affect me though."
"I'm not interested, it doesn’t mean anything to me whatsoever."
"I can’t stand the Royals. But I’m interested in the wedding, only because it’s Diana’s son. I love Diana!"
"I'm not really bothered, it doesn’t mean anything to me. It has its pluses, just a day off."
"I don't know. It’s not anything I’m bothered about really."
"I think it’s a great excuse for a day off work."
"It’s irrelevant to us, apart from the fact we have got to pay for it."
"I think it's nice. A Royal wedding doesn't come around very often and we should enjoy it."
"It just means a day off. I haven't got anything against the Royal family but the wedding doesn't mean anything to me."
"I couldn't give a monkeys! It means no more to me than any other wedding between two people I don't know personally."
"I think it's great, public morale has been down because of the recession and people not having much money to spend, but this is a welcome distraction for everyone."
"To me it means nothing, but it's nice and traditional, and they're right to have a bank holiday."
“It’s just another wedding, the same as any other, it’s nothing special at all. I don’t think anything of it. It means nothing to me. I am on the dole so it will not make any difference to my day to daily routine.”
“It’s just a normal wedding to me only they have lots of money and they see it as an excuse to splash out and show off. It doesn’t mean anything at all to me because I’m not even off work. It will just be a normal day for me.”
“It’s just another wedding isn’t it? I don’t think about it to be honest. Why should that be more special than any other wedding?”
“It means absolutely nothing to me except a day off work. It’s just a publicity stunt as it's coming during a time when there is nothing but bad news around, for example spending cuts, economic crisis and war."
“It shouldn’t be a bank holiday; there are more important things than a royal wedding at the moment like soldiers being killed in Afghanistan. To have a bank holiday is crazy. It means nothing to me at all, it is just another day and the shops will still be open. Normal people won’t see it as an event and will just carry on as normal.”
“I’m very much looking forward to the wedding, they both seem like lovely people and I’m sure Kate will look fabulous on the day.”
“For me all the royal wedding means is being able to have an extra day off, so thank you to the royal family for that!”
“I don’t have any real interest in the royal family, but it’s a happy occasion when anyone gets married, so good luck to the both of them.”
“It’s a good thing for our country, but I think people will just look forward to the public holiday more than anything else.”
“I think it’s wonderful, and a chance for a bit of happiness for the country in light of the troubles we’ve had here recently.”
“The wedding doesn’t mean much to me to be honest; I’ve stopped really paying attention to what the royals are doing nowadays.”
“As a fan of the royals, I’m excited about this wedding. I think Kate Middleton could use her position to do a lot of good, like Princess Diana did.”
“I don’t think a lot of it, but yes I will be watching it to see the outfits and to see Kate’s dress.”
“I don’t think a lot of it but yes I will be watching it to see the outfits and to see Kate’s dress.”
“I think Kate is lovely, she reminds me of Diana. I only work Fridays so I will be getting that day off. I can’t wait to see her dress, she’s beautiful."
“I can’t stand it. I won’t be watching it at all. I think it's ridiculous, all the hype. I don’t work Fridays so I won’t get a day off anyway.”
“I think it’s lovely, just what we need, I will be watching to see the dresses. They have had a lot of bad press, it will be nice for them.”
“I like the royals, I’m made up for them. I support it anyway... I’m a royalist.”
“It’s not a day off for me even though I’m retired. I don’t follow it, I don’t even know what date it is.”
“It’s in April isn’t it? I’m not interested in all the hype of it.”
“I’ve got the day off and its bank holiday weekend so it means a long weekend off for me.”
“I know it’s some date in April... it’s just a day off work.”
“I am really happy for them but to be honest I’m not interested in it all.”
