New recruits fly the flag at LSS

All the Level 1 students at Liverpool Screen School took part in a group flag-making activity

The troubles and worries of a starting a new academic life were put to one side as enrolment and ice-breaking activities gave first years a gentle and fun introduction to university at Liverpool Screen School.

More than 150 students from LSS poured into the Lecture Theatre for a brief overview of their activities and a general welcome, before they embarked on an art-themed bonding exercise.

Fifteen groups of ten students from different courses and backgrounds were brought together to make a flag that represents what the Screen School and university life means to them.

Graham Roberts, Director of LSS, said: “We talk about convergence all the time and yet when we get here we go ‘right, you’re journalism, you’re media – each into your corners,’ and that’s that. So hopefully this activity will bring the Screen School closer together.”

Media Professional Studies, Interactive Media, Film Studies and Journalism - the different cornerstones of LSS - mixed in to collaborate on the creative flags, which were then paraded through the Screen School building before an informal party to ease the new recruits into their surroundings.

Kristin Jacobsen from Grong, Norway, and Stefanie Zuber from Berlin, Germany, both International Journalism students, agreed that it was a fun activity which really broke down the barriers between different courses and helped them make instant friends.

“I didn’t know it was going to be such a full day but I’m really quite glad... I’ve had fun,” said Hannah Monks, a Film Studies student from Warrington.

Chloe Wilcock, a Journalism student from Huyton, said: “I didn’t expect it but I’m glad I did it. It’s different.”

Production technician Rachel Brewster was one of the support staff on hand to facilitate the exercise, and she felt it more than lived up to her expectations. “I think today has been very successful. At the beginning I was a bit apprehensive about how it would go, but it’s been good. It got people to mix into groups that they otherwise wouldn’t have and it was just really good fun,” she said.

Helen Turner, a journalism student from Manchester said: “I had a great time, I felt like I was 12 again!”

The flags will be on display in the Screen School for the next few weeks, and with the buzz around the building you can tell it’s term time again.
