With a growing number of students now setting up camp in Liverpool Screen School, it was only a matter of time before someone clocked onto the idea that a pub in the area might be a good idea.
Mango is a new, chic bar and restaurant situated on Dryden Road, just behind the Screen School, offering a calm and cool setting for students and (heaven forbid) lecturers alike to wind down after a hard day's work.
Formerly Wavers Bar and Restaurant, its owner Debbie Carter has injected a new lease of life into the once run down and dreary building, spending nearly £60,000 giving the place a colourful facelift.
The restaurant has a light airy feel about it, smart and trendy without being intimidating and pretentious. With funky, fashionable décor and sleek furnishings, Mango provides a comfortable background for a sandwich with friends at lunch time or a more sophisticated evening meal.
Despite its modern interior and professional look, the menu is by no means over-priced or showy. A range of sandwiches, salads and soups accompany more substantial meals such as burgers, fishcakes and lasagne, all made fresh on the premises.
Prices range from a measly £2.95, with the dearest item on the menu only costing £7.95! The food itself is of a really high quality, especially for the price.
What really makes this place though is the staff, who are welcoming and friendly to everyone, whether you are a top businessman or a hungry student looking for a bite to eat.
Owner Debbie is more than accommodating and keen to listen to suggestions on how she can make her new project more student-friendly. Already she is making changes to the menu to cater for vegetarians and vegans.
Mango is available for functions too, and is a really good space for up to around 200 people; perfect for an end of year party for one of the courses at the Screen School, and the drinks are fairly priced, just right for students on a tight budget.
All in all, this place is a real little gem and it would be a shame if it doesn’t turn into a great meeting place for Screen School students. Use it, don't lose it.
Definitely 10/10.
