As far as Mondays go, this one was something special. Not just because we were promised "one of the most exciting days in our university lives", or because we were recruited for a top secret project, but because it was one of those 'sink or swim' moments in life that we all dread, but can't get enough of.
Although we knew we were being recruited to provide content for the new Liverpool Screen School Journalism website, we weren't really sure what would happen. It was one of those things where you're expected to hit the ground running, and although you've got your running shoes on - you're not really sure what the terrain will be like, or how far you have to fall before you hit the ground. We didn't know what we would be doing, but the opportunity of participating in a third year project was electrifying.
After a semi-showy entrance as new Level 1 & 2 'Apprentice' candidates, we got to meet the team, see the website and understand where we fell into the grand scheme of things. It wasn't the biggest day of my life, but it was exciting in the sense that it was nothing like any other day at uni so far (after all, you don't get to jump on 'the Groovy Train' any day). Working on a project like this is certainly all about the experience. In a few hours I learned three important lessons:
Above all else: remain calm. Sounds simple enough, but keeping a smile in the hardest of times may possibly be a trait I admire most.
Secondly: leadership is more than just having your own ideas, it's about sharing them and listening to other people's ideas. It's about taking care of your people and making sure that no one is left behind.
Finally (and most importantly): you can always make a big deal out of something, whine about it and complain... or you can take it and get on with it.
The latter makes you successful. The first makes you a pain.
And when I said that in a tough interview with my lecturer a few days after the workshop, he replied: "Congratulations... you're hired!"
Now I'm learning so much about the world of work from Website Editor Dan Burke and he is showing me how to manage our content.
Exciting times!
